Grimsby & District Senior Netball League

T’was a fresh, crisp, cold and dry night on Tuesday 21st January 2020 – perfect conditions for netball when BG Solicitors (BG) stepped on court to compete with Fussey Engineering (Fussey). BG took an early lead in the 1st quarter which finished 7 – 2. BG’s experience as a team unit became far more convincing in the 2nd quarter which ended 14 – 3. Credit, however, must be given to Fussey’s shooters who had not played together before and their GS had not even played in that position. They struggled to penetrate the ball through BG’s solid defence (ie Carla Mowforth, Helen Otter and Danielle Roberts). Meanwhile, throughout the 3rd quarter, BG’s centre court players (ie Jean Williams (of BG’s litigation department), Joy Boothby and Sarah Allen) played blinding passes into their shooters’ circle where the shooters, Karen Boulton and Helen Meears capitalised on their ever developing partnership to increase the lead to 23 goals to Fussey’s 4.
The final quarter saw BG show no mercy with Fussey being unable to break down BG’s defence. BG scored another 8 goals with Fussey unable to net a single goal. BG took the final whistle as convincing winners at 31 goals to 4.
Full marks to Fussey who didn’t let the score sour their enjoyment of the game. They never let their heads go down and fought to the end. This was a game played with an excellent spirit and whilst it’s always better to be winners, Fussey epitomised the expression, “It’s the taking part that matters!!” They gave BG a good, friendly match which was competently umpired by Pippa Dowse and Karen Tofteguard.
Players of the match: – BG voted for Fussey’s Cathryn Murphy, Fussey voted for BG’s Karen Boulton and Pippa Dowse voted BG’s Jean Williams as her player.
